Wireless Access

Wireless access to the University network is available to staff and students at the South Street, Rockingham and Peel Campuses.

Locations and Maps

Wireless connections can be made within approximately 80 metres of a Wireless Access Point. This range is not guaranteed however and is often much less.
Maps of approximate wireless coverage at each campus are published at Murdoch Campus and Rockingham Campus. Peel Campus does not yet have an online map.

The wireless system in use currently, is an 802.11b/g* network, providing up to 55Mbit/s of network bandwidth.


Who can connect

Students
All Murdoch University students can establish wireless connections using their Murdoch username and password. Students must use the quota system to pay for their traffic.

Staff
Murdoch staff can connect to the wireless network using their Murdoch username and password as long as they have a VPN account. Staff can apply for/verify VPN accounts by visiting the following web page: https://wwwcoms.murdoch.edu.au/remote/online/apply

Eduroam
Visitors from insitutions participating in eduroam are able to access the Murdoch wireless network from select locations. Please refer to http://www.its.murdoch.edu.au/eduroam for more information

How to connect

To access the University network using a wireless connection, you must configure both wireless and VPN connections on your computer.

1: Configure your wireless adapter card

In order to use a wireless connection, your computer must have a wireless adapter card. To configure your wireless adapter, use these settings:

Broadcast SSID

MuWLAN

Channel

Automatic

Power

Automatic

Speed

Automatic (54*, 11 or 5.5 used)

Obtain IP address

automatically (via DHCP)



Windows XP & Windows 2000

  1. From the Start menu, navigate to Settings->Control Panel
  2. Double click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon
  3. Right click the icon that represents your wireless card and select Properties
  4. Click the Wireless Networks tab
  5. Click Add in the Preferred Networks section
  6. Enter a Network Name (SSID) of MuWLAN

    Your Wireless Networks tab should now look something like the image below:
  7. Click the Networking tab
  8. Click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) menu item and then click Properties
  9. A dialogue displaying TCP/IP Properties should be displayed. On this menu, select Obtain an IP address automatically
  10. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically
  11. Click OK to close the dialogue and save your changes



Mac OS X

  1. Double click the system preferences icon and click the Network icon
  2. Select Airport from the Show menu
  3. Click the TCP/IP tab
  4. Select Using DHCP from the Configure Menu
  5. Click the Airport tab
  6. Select Join network with best signal
  7. Click Apply Now

2: Configure a VPN connection

To connect to the rest of the campus network, you will need to configure a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection. The University's VPN server encrypts and secures all traffic sent over the unsecured wireless network.

3: Connect

After you have configured your wireless adapter and VPN connection, you are ready to connect. To test out your connection, you must be within range of a Wireless Access Point. Ensure that you are within range of the access points and then connect using your VPN connection.
You should now be connected to the University's network.
