Windows XP - Creating a new Account

For new users of the Murdoch modem pool

These instructions are designed to allow Murdoch Staff & Students to create a DialUp Networking account. It will allow access to the Murdoch University Network via their home Windows XP machine and the PPP software that comes with Windows XP.

Requirements for PPP

Dialup Installation

This step is built into the Windows XP installation process, and not detailed here.

To connect to Murdoch University via PPP, you need to create a new DialUp Connection. This connection needs to know the phone number for you to dial.

  1. Open "Control Panel" (Start menu -> Control Panel)
  2. In the "Control Panel" window, select "Phone and Modem Options".
  3. Select the "modems" tab and look for your modem in the list.

  5. Click "Next" then "Connect to the Internet" and click "Next" again.
  6. Click "Setup my connection manually" and click "Next".
  7. Click on your modem and click "Next".

    3. The costs in the table above are IN ADDITION to the call charges your telephone service provider will pass on to you to make the call to the Murdoch modem pool numbers.
  10. Enter your username ( for example, the username would be your Murdoch Username for Murdoch Staff or your student number for undergraduates) and password.
  11. Click on "Next" and then click on "Finish".

Connecting

After completing the above steps:

  1. Click on "Start" then "Connect to" then "Connect" and then "Dial"
  2. A window will come up showing that you are dialing in to the number you selected above. Your computer will now dial in and you'll probably hear a modem sounds as it makes its connection. Once your username and password are verified, you'll be connected.

In order for you to use the TCP/IP service that you have just created, you need to install some Internet Access Software. Please note that Windows XP comes prepacked with some default software Such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, but other programs may be required to perform other online tasks such as Telnet (Windows XP has only a very basic Telnet client).

Modem Server Security

The Modem Server has been secured to only allow Authorised Murdoch Staff & Students into the Murdoch Network. The Modem Server has a few types of service. Most staff and postgraduate students will fit into the 7904 service, and all undergraduate students have access to the Student Network Modem Pool.

If you are a staff member or postgraduate student, your Murdoch Username and Password will be used for the 7904 service. (For staff, it's your staff number also.) If you are a undergraduate student, your username and password from GCL Lab login will be used. (For undergraduate students, your username is your student number.)
