Windows ME Dialup- Creating a new Account

For new users of the Murdoch modem pool

These instructions are designed to allow Murdoch Staff & Students to create a Dialup Networking account. It will allow access to the Murdoch University Network via their home Windows Millennium Edition (ME) machine and the PPP software that comes with Windows ME.

To install the Windows ME PPP using these instructions, you will not require any Murdoch University provided software.

Please note that Windows ME also comes bundled with Internet Explorer (a Web Browser), Telnet and FTP programs. These may or may not have been installed when Windows ME was first installed on your machine.

The competing Netscape Web Browser and other 32 bit application software is available via the network or on CDs from the Staff and Student Servicedesk.

Either browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) would be suitable for use.

Connecting with Dialup Networking

The next stage in Dialup Networking is what you will now use every time you want to log onto the network. For these steps to work, all the previous steps must have been completed.

  1. Open the Dialup Networking folder.
  2. Double click the connection icon that you made previously. ie Murdoch
  3. Enter your username. (This the name you sign on as when you collect information from the Staff or Student Myinfo kiosk. For staff, it's your Murdoch Username. For students, your username is your student number.)
  4. Enter your password. (The modem server password, which is the same password as you use for Myinfo, or for students, for GCL Lab login.)
  5. Select the Connect button.

If all goes well, you will see a window pop up onto your screen. It shows the script running as it logs into the modem server.

In order for you to use the TCP/IP service that you have just created, you need to install some Internet Access Software. Please note that Windows ME comes pre-packaged with some default software (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Telnet & FTP) but these particular programs may or may not have been installed when Windows ME was first installed.

Modem Server Security

The Modem Server has been secured to only allow Authorised Murdoch Staff & Students into the Murdoch Network. The Modem Server has a few types of service. Most staff and postgraduate students will fit into the 7904 service, and all undergraduate students have access to the Student Network Modem Pool.

If you are a staff member or postgraduate student, your Murdoch Username and Password will be used for the 7904 service. If you are a undergraduate student, your username and password from GCL Lab login will be used.

For further information on the Modem Server Category service, please see http://wwwits.murdoch.edu.au/dialup/dial-in.htm.
