Windows 3.1 Dialup - Creating a new Account

This guide will help you install TRUMPET Winsock and the Network Software onto your IBM Compatible computer and gain access to the Internet.

ITS provides Dial Up software to support Windows 3.11. This software consists of PPP software, Network software and Netscape.

Please Note: As of the 1st September 2000 Murdoch University will no longer be offering any guarantee of support for this version of the software. However these instructions and software will remain available. We strongly advise you upgrade to a newer version of your operating system.

Software Licence Notice

Some of the software packages on these installation disks may be shareware. However, Murdoch staff and students are covered by the relevent shareware site licences and hence no further fees are due.

Windows 95 Users

The TRUMPET Winsock software is currently only available in a 16 bit version and will only work with 16 bit programs. If you are running Windows 95 specific programs (eg. Netscape for Windows 95) or other 32 bit applications (eg. Eudora - 32bit version), they will not work through the TRUMPET software. We recommend using the Windows 95 Dialup Instructions provided by ITS.

Requirements

Software Installation

This installation procedure is based upon the windows PPP disk which can be obtained from the ITS Helpdesk at Murdoch University or from the University FTP Site (The file name on the FTP server is win31ppp.ima).

Installing PPP Software

  1. Insert Disk 1 (PPP Disk) into your disk drive (generally A:) and from within Windows, execute the install.exe program from the drive. This can be done by using FileManager, or from the Program Manager. Under the menu File, select Run and type a:\install.

  2. Note : If your 3 1/2" drive is b:, replace a: with b:.

  3. You will be prompted for an installation directory. The default is C:\NETWORK.
  4. You will be prompted for a Program Manager Group. The default is Network Software.
  5. Your machine will now access the diskette and install the PPP software.
  6. IMPORTANT!- Once PPP has been installed, open File Manager and open the directory you installed Trumpet into. (Default is C:\NETWORK)
  7. Select the file TRUMPWSK.IN_ and then select File, Rename.
  8. In the lower box, type TRUMPWSK.INI and click OK

Using PPP

A PPP connection is established when Trumpet dials up the Murdoch University and logs into either central, student or another Solaris machine. The Network Software uses Trumpet WinSock as a pipe to talk to the Murdoch TCP/IP Network. Therefore, in order to get the Network Software running, you must establish a PPP connection, and once it is running, leave it running in the background.

Configuring Trumpet

Trumpet is currently configured to run on COM Port 2. Some modems may be on another Port Setting to this. (External modems normally COM Port 1 or 2, internal fax/modems Com Port 1, 2, 3 or 4). To change the Port Setting, open Trumpet Winsock and select File, Setup and change the Slip Port Setting to the COM Port that your modem is connected.

It also helps to make sure any reference to handshaking is set to NONE from within the PORTS option in Windows CONTROL PANELS.

Finally on some computers you may need to make sure the path c:\network appears before c:\windows within the PATH line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Remember that when you change any of the settings with Trumpet, you have to close it down, and restart Trumpet.

Establishing a PPP Connection

The first time you use Trumpet or the first time following selection of the "reset" command you will need to perform the following steps to setup a PPP connection.

  1. Run Trumpet WinSockets program by double clicking on the Trumpet WinSocket icon in the Network Software Group.
  2. Select PPP Options from the File menu and enter your username and password. (This the name you sign on as when you collect information from the Staff or Student Myinfo kiosk. For staff, it's your Murdoch Username. For students, your username is your student number. The modem server password is the same password as you use for Myinfo, and for students, the GCL login password. )
  3. Select Login under the Dialler menu. Trumpet should now ask for the phone number to be dialled. Your number will depend on what service you have - check the table to find the number for your service.

  5. The costs in the table above are IN ADDITION to the call charges your telephone service provider will pass on to you to make the call to the Murdoch modem pool numbers.
  6. If all the above information is entered correctly Trumpet will then establish your PPP connection and you can minimise Trumpet and leave it running in the background. To minimise, click on the down arrow in the top right hand corner of the Winsocket window (Windows 3.11). On subsequent connections you will not have to re-enter the number as it has been saved. So you simply need to perform the following steps;
  7. Run Trumpet WinSockets program by double clicking on the Trumpet WinSocket icon in the Network Software Group.
  8. Select Login under the Dialer menu.
  9. If your password is accepted, Trumpet will then establish your PPP connection and you can minimise Trumpet and leave it running in the background.

Note 1: You can reset the phone number you have entered by selecting reset under the Dialler menu.

Finishing a PPP Session

Before closing Trumpet, ensure that all Network Software Applications have been closed down.

  1. Maximise the Trumpet icon by double clicking on it.
  2. Select Dialler, Bye to disconnect.
  3. Exit Trumpet Program.

Troubleshooting

If you run into difficulty, the first thing you should check are that the settings are correct in your Trumpet Winsock setup. The easiest way to do this would simply be to reinstall the software using the latest release of the software. Copies can be obtained from the Help Desk reception area. Bring two blank 1.44MB disks. If you wish to check the settings manually, run the Trumpet Winsock program and go into File Setup. The settings should be as follows:

Winsock.DLL Conflict

User's who use Ethernet cards may experience problems because they already have a WINSOCK.DLL file in their C:\WINDOWSdirectory. In the C:\NETWORK directory are two batch files which should be run before starting windows.

Another fix is to add C:\NETWORK directory to the PATH statement in your autoexec.bat file. Make sure it goes in before C:\WINDOWS in the PATH statement.

Garbage on my Trumpet Winsock screen

You have most likely selected the wrong COM Port. In an IBM computer the COM1/COM3 and COM2/COM4 are paired. This is because each pair of COM Ports use the same interrupt. Therefore, if you have your mouse plugged into COM1 and your Modem on COM3, then you will get errors. Also, if you set Trumpet Winsock to the COM Port that your mouse is using, you'll get garbage on your screen, and will probably freeze the mouse, if not the computer.

Proxy Settings: Important!

Don't forget to set Proxy server to use the Murdoch Proxy Cache. This will allow you to access web pages faster a majority of the time. For Netscape, this is done by:

  1. Select Options and then from the pull down menu select Network Preferences...
  2. Select the Proxies Tab.
  3. In Proxies chose Automatic Proxy Configuration.
  4. In the Configuration URL type http://wwwcache/autocache
  5. Click OK.

The site http://wwwcache. murdoch.edu.au also has instructions for most browsers.

Appendix

The appendix contains some points of interest for those of you who have problems, or want to change the default settings.

It doesn't work!

If your installation does not seem to work, then please go back over the installation steps, and confirm that all the settings are correct.
