Getting connected: Mac OS 10 ( OS X) PPP help
This page for Macintosh OS 10 users recommends that you set up your Internet connection
to hosts at Murdoch University with Apple's standard
"built in" PPP as supplied on the Mac OS 10 system CD. This page assumes that you
have a standard OS 10 or 10.1 installation.
Earlier software used for Internet connections, such as InterSLIP, MacPPP, FreePPP
and MacTCP, is not usable with System 10. If you are considering an upgrade from
System 9.x to System 10, you should contact your Apple dealer for advice on purchasing
and feasibility for installing OS 10 on your Mac.
This page draws heavily from the guidelines published originally by the Teaching and Learning Center
Network Settings
- From the Apple Menu, select "System Preferences".

- Now select "Network".

- In the "Show:" field select "Internal Modem".
TCP/IP
- Under the "TCP/IP" tab, set the "Configure:" field to "Using PPP".
- In the "Domain Name Servers" field enter 134.115.4.33 (the primary) and 134.115.8.33 (the secondary).
- For Search domain, type in murdoch.edu.au

PPP
- Select the "PPP" tab.
- In the "Service Provider:" field enter the name you wish to give to
this connection. "Murdoch" would probably be a good choice, but you
can put whatever you want here.
- Enter the dial-in number in the "Telephone Number"field. For student
use 9360 7911, staff 9360 7904 or 9360 7901. For details of
other numbers including Rockingham numbers, see Modem
Numbers.
- Enter your login name in the "Account Name" box, and your password.
Your account name (sometimes referred to as user name) is the name you sign on as when you collect information from the Staff or Student Myinfo kiosk. For staff, it's your Murdoch Username.
For students, your username is your student number.
- If you share your computer with other users you may wish to not check the "Save
password" box.

- Now click on the "PPP Options" button. The settings for Redialing
and Connection are optional but we recommend that you do make the settings as
specified below.
- You can set "Redial if busy" by ticking the checkbox. Redial is
very useful if you need to try repeatedly when all lines are busy. If Redial
is on, the number of redials and time between retries should not exceed Austel
limits (up to 10 redials, at least 5 seconds apart).
- We recommend "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications"
be off (unticked), because often you may wish to use Netscape or Eudora, for
example, for offline work such as reading web files saved on your hard disk,
composing a long email, etc.
- The "Disconnect if idle for" option (you set the number of minutes)
may be useful for STD callers, who may forget that a call charge meter is merrily
incrementing their telephone account charges.
- In the "Advanced Options" section make sure the following settings
are correct:
- "Connect using a terminal window (command line)" must be left unchecked.
- Tick the "Use TCP header compression" box.
- Click the "OK" button.
Modem
- Select the "Modem" tab.
- Slect your modem from the menu.
- For "Sound:" it is your preference. Selecting "On" will let you hear the modem noise. Selecting "Off" will mute this.
- For "Dialing:" make sure "Tone" is selected and the "Wait for dial tone before dialling" option is ticked.
- Click on the "Save" button and you're finished!
Connecting
To connect, all you have to do is go to the "Applications" folder and select "Internet Connect". If you chose not to let your computer remember your password (in the Networking setup above), you will be able to enter it now.
Appendix
The appendix contains some points of interest for those of you who have problems, or want to change the default settings.
It doesn't work!
If your installation does not seem to work, then please go back over the installation steps, and confirm that all the settings are correct.
