Macintosh OS7 Dialup - Creating a New Account
This guide relies heavily on Roger Atkinson's excellent instructions for connecting to Murdoch.
ITS provides Dial Up software to support Windows 3.11 and Macintosh OS7. This software consists of PPP software, Network software and Netscape.
- The PPP software consists of FreePPP for the Macintosh.
- The Network software group includes Eudora (an e-mail package) a terminal program and an FTP tool.
- The Netscape software is version 2.02. More recent versions of Netscape (suitable for newer Macs) are available from
FreePPP is now the preferred connection software for System 7.0 - 7.6 users. However, older machines with limited memory (less than 8Mb) may experience problems. Mac OS8 users should only use Apple's own implementation of PPP, see Mac OS8 PPP help.
Please Note: As of the 1st September 2000 Murdoch University will no longer be offering any guarantee of support for this version of the software. However these instructions and software will remain available. We strongly advise you upgrade to a newer version of your operating system.
Obtain Dialup Software
In order to connect to the University, you will need to install certain software packages on your Macintosh.
Download Options
- Basic Package (109K): This link will download FreePPP version 1.0.3. When uncompressed, it should turn into the FreePPP 1.0.3 Folder. Place the files in the folder into their required locations:
- Config PPP goes in System Folder/Control Panels
- PPP goes in System Folder/Extensions
- Full Install (1.2M): This link will download the Murdoch Dialup Installer, also available from the Student and Staff helpdesks. It will uncompress into a program that when run will install:
- FreePPP 1.0.3
- NSCA Telnet
- Fetch 3.0
- Eudora 1.5.4
- Other Files (152K): Some users of old machines may need to install MacTCP. Only download this if you have an old machine and it does not have either MacTCP or TCP/IP
It is convenient to do "Make Alias" to Config PPP. Place the alias in System Folder/Apple Menu Items. When run, PPP creates another required file, PPP Preferences in System Folder/Preferences.
Setup
1. Configure Mac TCP or TCP/IP
Open the Control Panel Folder in your System Folder. If you can see the MacTCP icon, proceed to the next stage, Configuring MacTCP. If you have TCP/IP instead, then skip the next stage and proceed with Configuring TCP/IP. If you have both of those, then you probably have a corrupted system and should consider re-installing your system software. If you have neither, download MacTCP from the link above, and place it in your Control Panel Folder.
Configuring MacTCP
- Open Control Panel MacTCP (see below if Control Panel TCP/IP is what you have on your Mac).
- The first window should show the icon for PPP. Other icons may be there also, depending upon what other devices or software you may have on your Mac, but only PPP is available for modem users.
- Enter the IP Address 0.0.0.0 as shown (if you cannot type in the IP box, first do steps 5. onwards and then come back to step 3.).
- Click upon the "More" button and go to the next step illustrated below.
- In MacTCP's second window, illustrated below, place the bullet for "Obtain Address" in the circle for "Server".
- Ignore Gateway Address, Class, Subnet Mask, Net, Subnet and Node. All are inactive for Obtain Address set to "Server" (various values may be present, depending on the Mac's previous history - ignore them).
- Complete the Domain and IP Address boxes as shown.
- Click OK when finished, which returns you to the first window. If necessary, do step 3. (entering IP Address 0.0.0.0). Close the MacTCP window and restart your Macintosh. After that, you will proceed further with your installation of FreePPP.

Configuring TCP/IP
- Open Control Panel TCP/IP (see above if Control Panel MacTCP is what you have on your Macintosh).
- For the "Connect via:" selection (click on the little black triangle to see selections), select PPP. If there is more than one kind of PPP choice indicated, eg both PPP (from Apple) and MacPPP (MacPPP, FreePPP), be sure to select MacPPP.
- For the "Configure:" selection, select Using PPP Server.
- Complete the Name server addresses and Search domains boxes as shown.
- Close the window when finished. Say "Yes" to saving the new configuration. A restart should not be necessary. You will then proceed further with your installation of PPP.

2. Config PPP "down" or offline state
- Open Config PPP to to obtain the window illustrated.
- Select Port Name (Modem Port, Printer-Modem Port, etc) for your Mac.
- Leave Idle Timeout at "None" and Echo Interval at "Off".
- Leave Disable Auto Connect "Off" (ie, no X in its box).
- Terminal Window is set "Off". However, if in some cases an automated connection fails, try the alternative of manual connection using Terminal Window.
- Leave Hangup on Close set "on" (ie, an X in its box).
- Leave Quiet Mode and Long Re-dial Delay set "off".
- Selection of PPP Server and use of Config..., New... and Delete... are described below.
3. New... window
Use the "New..." button to name a new PPP Server, eg student 7911, carmen 7912, central 7904, central 7901.
4. Selection of PPP Server
- Select a PPP Server by opening up the selection menu as shown. This illustration shows selection of "cleo 7912".
- Now you have to assign Config properties to the PPP Server connection. This is illustrated in the next step.
- To delete a PPP Server, select it and click the Delete button.
- If the "Open" button remains "greyed out" you may require further help to get it to work, or to find an alternative to version 1.0.3.
5. Config... window
|

|
|
|
- Obtain the Config... window from the Config... button in Config PPP main window. PPP Server Name will be whichever one you selected in previous step. This example below is named "student" for student's 9360 7911 modem number, but otherwise the settings are the same for other hosts and telephone numbers.
- Set Port Speed to a rate suitable for your Macintosh, for example no higher than 19200 for old Macs, or 38400 or 57600 for middle aged Macs. Set Flow Control to "CTS & RTS (DTR)" - that is essential.
- Select Tone Dial (some of the oldest telephone exchanges may not have tone dial available, and in such cases Pulse Dial will be required).
- Enter Phone num. This example is for 9360 7911 (for student), other numbers are included in the table. See also http://wwwcoms.murdoch.edu.au/dialup/dial-in.html for a list of the other modem pools available. If you need a leading zero to get an outside line, or an STD area code, include that. If you are dialling from either campus, you can omit the 9360 to use the internal PABX lines. If dialling from the Rockingham area, change 9360 to 9553 to make the call a local one.
- Enter Modem Init (modem initialisation string) as recommended by the manufacturer of your modem. In most cases, AT&F (reset to factory defaults) will be satisfactory.
- Modem Connect timeout can stay at 90 seconds, which is usually an adequate time to allow for the remote modem to answer and negotiate with your modem to determine a sustainable speed.
- Click "Done" to record settings for this particular PPP Server selection, then re-open the Config... window in order to proceed to the next step.
6. Connect Script... and Authentication... windows
- All boxes in the Connect Script window should be empty.
- In the Authentication... window illustrated here, enter your login name and password for your host. Leaving it empty is not an option.
7. IPCP Options... and LCP Options... windows
Both options should be left at "Default settings" (click upon the "Default settings" button in each case if you are uncertain).
Connecting
- Once you have set up your computer as described above, from now on you will only have to open up ConfigPPP and click upon the "Open" button in Config PPP's main window to connect.
- During the connection process you will obtain a "Status" window. There is a 30-40 second wait between modem connection (when your modem turns off its speaker) and initiation of PPP communications.
Config PPP "up" state
- If all goes well (and succeeding first time is rare), you will obtain the "PPP up" window shown here. Test the connection by running Netscape - if you can obtain a page from a Murdoch host, your PPP works.
- If you can connect to a Murdoch site, but not to any international sites, it may be that your proxy setting are incorrectly set. The instructions for the various browsers are located at http://wwwcache.murdoch.edu.au
- If PPP does not work, even though it claims to be connected, you may have to try alternatives like upgrading your operating system.
- To disconnect, click upon "Close" (to hide the Config PPP window whilst connected, click upon the small square in its top bar, and re-open from Control panels when you wish to disconnect).
